BSU Students And Faculty Walked The Fields Of World-Famous Stone Structure

BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University students and faculty were awestruck by the sight of Stonehenge when they visited during a week-long alternative spring break trip to London.

The groups travelled about two hours outside of London to see the historic stone monument, which dates back to about 3100 BC and features standing sarsen stones 13 feet high that weigh around 25 tons. The structure underwent different stages of construction and usage over thousands of years, and students considered it a treat to get an in-person view of a global landmark most have only seen through a screen.

“It was cool to have an opportunity to see it in person and learn the history behind it,” said Nicholas Wallace, sophomore computer science major. “You see it on websites or an Instagram post. It was interesting how they could move the stones. It’s a crazy sight to see.”

The group learned how Stonehenge was built and the theories on how the site was used before it was abandoned and became a ruin. Some theories suggest Stonehenge was used as an early burial ground, a place of worship for ancient druids or as a physical calendar of sorts that marked the summer and winter solstices. Whatever the theory, it’s all still speculation, and any concrete answers may be lost to time.

“No one really knows why it was built,” said Laila Gwathmey, a junior psychology major. “It’s been there for thousands of years and no one knows why it’s there.”

Even with its mysterious past, the group enjoyed the change of scenery that came with traveling into the English countryside to see one of the world’s historic wonders.

“It was really beautiful,” said Gwathmey. “The stones were really big in person, and I didn’t know they were that tall. I loved the land and nature around it. It’s really cool.”
