UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Due to the unfortunate outbreak of an undetermined illness afflicting dogs, the Prince George’s County Animal Shelter is temporarily closing. Quarantine protocols were implemented on June 4 and the disease is not currently affecting other animals inside while testing proceeds. This is the 3rd closing at the shelter so far this year.
“As we are seeing an uptick of disease strike shelters nationwide, we are acting quickly to help prevent this outbreak from further spread,” says David Fisher, Associate Director of the Department of Animal Services. “All staff are working overtime to quarantine and treat the animals in our care at this time. To do this most effectively, it is necessary for us to temporarily suspend taking in new dogs. The best place for a dog to be now is with their owner.”
Pets can leave the facility to be returned to their owner, or if they are set for adoption or fostering and show no signs of illness. For all releases, the pet owner must sign an acknowledgment of potential illness and their pet will be treated with long-acting medication.
We have previously covered the animal shelter; read more here and here.
