CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. – A police pursuit in Prince George’s County ended in tragedy Friday evening when a fleeing vehicle collided with multiple cars, resulting in the death of a juvenile and injuries to others.

According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID), the incident began around 6:25 p.m. on March 7 when an officer with the District Heights Police Department (DHPD) attempted a traffic stop on an Infiniti SUV in the 6000 block of Marlboro Pike. The driver initially complied but then fled northbound onto Addison Road South.

The officer lost sight of the vehicle but relayed its description over the radio. A short time later, officers from both District Heights and Capitol Heights Police Departments spotted the Infiniti and attempted to stop it. The pursuit ended when the Infiniti crashed into four vehicles in the 1200 block of Addison Road South.

A juvenile occupant of one of the vehicles struck in the crash was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead. A woman in the same car sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized. The driver of the Infiniti was taken into custody and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The remaining occupants of the other vehicles involved suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team is assisting the IID in the investigation. Officers involved were equipped with body-worn cameras, and two police vehicles had dash cameras capturing portions of the incident.

The IID will release the names of the officers involved within two business days, unless protocol requires an extension. Due to juvenile privacy laws, the identity of the deceased minor is being withheld.

The IID has stated that body-worn camera footage will generally be released within 20 business days. However, the release may be delayed for additional investigation, technical processing, or to allow the juvenile’s family to view the footage before public disclosure.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the IID at (410) 576-7070 or email IID@oag.state.md.us.

This remains an active investigation.
