

SUITLAND, Md. – The Independent Investigations Division (IID) of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General today released the body-worn camera footage of the Prince George’s County Police Department’s (PGPD) fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on February 1, 2024, in Suitland, Maryland. The decedent was previously identified as 31-year-old Melvin Jay of Suitland.
On February 1, 2024, at approximately 5:25 p.m., PGPD officers responded to an apartment in the 5100 block of Suitland Road in Suitland, after receiving a 911 call from a resident for a report of a breaking and entering in-progress at their home.
Upon arriving on scene, one officer entered the residence where he encountered Mr. Jay and began giving him commands. During the encounter, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking Mr. Jay, who was pronounced dead on scene. No officers were injured.
Two handguns were recovered from the scene, one in Mr. Jay’s pocket and the second in the kitchen sink. The IID has identified Mr. Jay as a resident of the home. Mr. Jay was not the original 911 caller.
The Independent Investigations Division continues to investigate the circumstances of the fatal shooting.
